AI is transforming buildings across the U.S.
Pretty much every company in the world is adding AI to their marketing to say they are an AI company.
But in reality, AI hasn't really transformed the physical world that much. With one exception: AI today is already having a transformative impact in thousands and thousands of buildings across the country.
Most buildings are running on dumb technology
Before AI, a heating system in a normal building would rely on a simple timer that would turn the system on and then turn it off after a certain period of time.
Now, using AI, smart controls can be much, much smarter about how they heat and cool building. In fact, every time a heating system is scheduled to run, AI can make a decision about whether it actually needs to go on or if that cycle can be skipped. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but a heating cycle can use hundreds or thousands of gallons of heating oil or therms of gas.
AI can tell the system when it makes sense to skip a heating cycle
This not only costs a lot of money, but it also puts a ton of carbon into the atmosphere. By skipping 20% or more of these cycles, you can transform the carbon footprint and cost of living and working in buildings.
How does it do this? Well, AI is able to dynamically make predictions at what temperature people actually need right this moment.
Using AI = using 20% less fuel
So yes, it will factor in the weather is outside right now, what the temperature is inside right now, what time of day and what time of year it is. But it will also examine where the weather is going over the next 12 hours. It'll compile all of this, plus information about and how the building and people in the building have responded to it for years in the past, to dynamically predict what the temperature should be right this instant..
It's a huge deal because a single degree of temperature inside in a building could be 10% of the energy usage. So if you can move the temperature a couple of degrees, and not only make people more comfortable, you can also cut the energy bill and costs and carbon output by about 20%.
This is transformational to tens of thousands of buildings, and it's happening already right this second.
AI is a buzzword, but it's also having a real impact on millions of people's lives right now through the buildings that they're living and working in.
